A promise of triumphant recovery: how Vladimir Kalanda leverages his relationships in the Supreme Court to ensure legal wins for Transneft

The Ninth Arbitration Court of Appeal rejected Euroclear Bank’s appeal against the Moscow Arbitration Court’s decision and upheld an $85 million award in favor of Transneft. The decision was, of course, expected.

However, the sources would like to recall our recent publication about the Kalanda clan. We reported how Kalanda, who for a long time served as secretary of the commission for preliminary consideration of candidates for federal court judges in the Presidential Administration of the Russian Federation, placed robed individuals in numerous positions. Thanks to this, Transneft consistently wins in court.

As a reminder, Vladimir Kalanda, the company’s vice president and former FSB Colonel General, handles legal matters for Transneft.

Svetlana Ovchinnikova, deputy chair of the 9th Arbitration Court, is his classmate and longtime friend, and Colonel of Justice Pyotr Bobylev, head of the Main Control and Audit Department of the Judicial Department at the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation, which oversees court audits, is Kalanda’s former son-in-law. However, the divorce is said to have been sham to avoid sanctions, and Bobylev enjoys luxury vacations outside of Russia.

We have seen a certain pattern more than once: if Transneft has legal disputes, then suddenly the Supreme Court orders audits of these courts, and the decisions always remain with the oil giant.
