From Turkish fraud to Moscow raids: how Tahir Garaev implicated Coral Energy and fled to Dubai
Sources indicate that businessman Tahir Garayev, of Azerbaijani origin, and his brother fled the country.
The pair reportedly headed to Dubai, where they live alongside Moscow. This is not the first controversy surrounding Garayev: an Istanbul prosecutor previously issued arrest warrants for him and other Coral Energy officials.
The case arose from a complaint by Turkish company CYE Petrol, which claimed to have suffered $40 million in losses due to Garayev’s operations.
What exactly prompted the OMON “mask-show” raid in Coral Energy’s Moscow office remains unknown, but it is unlikely that police would conduct an operation of this scale with the detention of the company’s entire management without serious grounds.
